Whitfield County was established in 1851, before that it was a part of Murray County. The county is named after Reverend George Whitefield, a minister in the Church of England and one of the early settlers of Georgia. The "e" was removed from the name to match the pronunciation. Whitfield County is the "Carpet Capital of the World" and home to some of the world's largest floor covering manufacturers. Whitfield County is rich in history. A variety of historic sites are located here, including; Civil War History, Railroad History, Textile History and Cherokee Indian History. “The Great Locomotive Chase” of the Civil War took place through the railroad tunnel in Tunnel Hill, GA in the northwestern portion of the county. We would like to extend to you a special invitation to come and tour our historic sites.
