A community united can defeat the problem
The Whitfield County Sheriff's Office became part of the F.B.I. Street Task Force in
2005, when there became an over increasing concern of gang activity in the area. The purpose of the Task Force is to identify and target for prosecution organized crime groups responsible for drug trafficking, money laundering, alien smuggling, crimes of violence (murder, robbery, aggravated assault) and violent street gangs.
The agencies involved in the Conasauga Safe Street Task Force are Federal Bureau of
Investigation (F.B.I.); Calhoun Police Department; Dalton Police Department; Georgia
Bureau of Investigation (G.B.I.) and the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office.
Through the course of gathering intelligence and information, it was quickly determined
the actual "organization" of gangs in the area, was much less than the belief of the public and local media.
The lack of ranking structure of members, the non- existence of levels of membership and financial backing, are key components in true gang activity. It was quickly determined that though individuals "claimed" gang affiliation, it was often acts of violence by a single individual.
The Task Force remains very active today and reports a significant drop in reported
incidents and activity.
